Lets dive into the magnificent world of ancient sanctuaries, cities and tombs of Thracians!

Not much is known for this ancient and great civilization and remarkable discoveries are still made today out there in the berried tombs and sites.
Into The Wild BG will take you on a journey through the most important of these sites showing you not only the famous ones but also hidden and mystic sanctuaries!

Perperikon, Tatul, Harmankaya, The Womb cave, The Big Hairy tomb – just to name a few…
Furthermore, you will enjoy the fantastic bulgarian cuisine and hospitality as well as a deeper look into some of the locals foklore and traditions!
Short hikes will uncover stunning views of the surroundings and bring us into the heart of the picturesque mountain regions!

We will also visit Bachkovo Monastery which is the second largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria hiding a 10th century icon,
plus a visit into Assen’s fortress and church – one of the best preserved medieval castles will show us some of Bulgaria’s most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments!

ITINERARY

Day 1:
Arrival – Pick up from airport – Transfer to Plovdiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe. Overnight and dinner in town.

Day 2:

Breakfast at the hotel followed by transfer to the area of Kazanlak town and the Valley of Thracian Kings. First of all we will pay a visit at the best preserved Thracian tomb in the country – The Big Hairy. This tomb will strike you with the hand cut stone blocks that protect the sarcofagus of the very successful Thracian king – Seuthes III and his legendary bronze mask! After that we will stop by the near impressive Russian Orthodox church which was built as a gift from Russia to Bulgaria and as a tribute to all who died during the liberation war with Ottoman empire. Afternoon visit in the Archaeological museum of Kazanlak where we will see firsthand some of the Thracian gold. Overnight and dinner in town.

Day 3:

Breakfast and transfer to the city of “Beroe” or Stara Zagora how it is called nowadays. We will enjoy some fantastic Roman remains in the old center and in the very large museum. But much more impressive will be our visit in the Neolithic village, which was accidentally discovered during sewege excavations for a nearby hospital. This will be a journey back in time of about 8000 years. A museum was build directly around the 6000 b.c. dwelling discovered there. Transfer to Haskovo – overnight and dinner in hotel.

Day 4:

Breakfast and visit in the Alexandrovo tomb a reconstruction of a tomb with fantastic frescoes and a fascinating story about its discovery of the Bulgarian Indiana Jones – the late, great mr. George Kitov. Transfer to the Kardzhali area, where we will stay in a cozy lakeside hotel for the next two nights. In the afternoon we will visit the Womb cave where after some steep hiking we will experience the real mysticism of the Eastern Rhodopes – land of Thracians. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5:

After traditionally tasty breakfast we will head to Perperikon, probably the largest ancient stone city in Bulgaria – we say probably because discoveries are still being made and we do not know yet for sure. It is believed that Perperikon holds the ancient temple of Dionysus which was described in many Greek books. It is believed that Alexander the Great received the prophecy he’d rule the world, here at these altars. Excavations are still going on every day at the site and we will witness it grow as they keep discovering new Thracian, Greek and Christian sites every year. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 6:

Breakfast, packing and a transfer to Tatul – probably the most influential of all the sites we will visit on the tour. The place is very mystic – 2000 b.c. open tomb perched on a top of a rock, surrounded by amazing mountains and landscape and it is believed that was the burrial site of Orpheus himself. A fantastic and very well preserved wall remaining from a 3 century b.c. Thracian fort is also still there for us to see. Transfer to Harman kaya – Second largest discovered ancient city with fantastic circle carvings for star estimations and sun calculations on a beautiful top once again surrounded by amazing landscape and the traditional mystic Eastern Rhodope atmosphere. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 7:

Breakfast, packing and a transfer back to the Plovdiv area through an amazing an scenic mountain road. A visit the medieval Orthodox church and castle of Asen perched high on a hill top and a visit in one of the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria, Bachovo, which holds a 10th century Icon. Back in Plovdiv in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 8:

The last day of this colorful adventure will be dedicated to Plovdiv. Older than London, older than Rome it is a town of many cultures. A visit in Plovdiv’s old town – one of the most famouse touristic sites in Bulgaria. Shopping, visiting art galleries and museums as well as other sites in the city and enjoing the views to Plovdiv – 2019’s European capital of culture!

Transfer to airport – departure.

The price includes: Licensed guide, half board (bed, breakfast, dinner), transportation according to the described itinerary.

The price does not include: Flights, remaining meals, drinks, personal expenses, tickets for visiting local sites, everything not listed as included.

* The prefered airport for arrival for this tour is Plovdiv! Arrival possible in Sofia also – transfer will cost additional 50 euro!
